The following was copied from the talk page of individual transferable quota by User:ImperfectlyInformed. I think these two should be merged. I like the "Individual fishing quota" as a title more, since it is more descriptive, and the term which I was familiar with prior to reading these articles. II | (t - c) , 13 July (UTC). Most U.S. fish stocks are fully or over-exploited, and harvesting in many fisheries far exceeds sustainable levels. The individual fishing quota (IFQ) is a relatively new instrument under which harvesting privileges are allocated to individual fishermen--innovative yet controversial for its feared effect on fishing communities and individual fishermen. There are two Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) programs for commercial harvest in the Gulf of Mexico: red snapper and grouper/tilefish. These are federal programs, but they apply to all commercial harvest of red snapper, groupers, . 11/14/ Vol. 44/ Development.

If the quota is thus exhausted within a relatively short time, fishing capacity then remains unused until the next fishing season. In order to give the individual fishermen a modicum of planning security throughout the entire fishing season, the TACs are therefore allocated to individual . 50 CFR Subpart D - Individual Fishing Quota Management Measures. Congress. Senate. Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.]. Individual Fishing Quota Act of hearing before the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, United States Senate, One Hundred Seventh Congress, first session, May 2, Individual fishing quotas (IFQs) also known Individual Fishing Quota Act of 2001 book "individual transferable quotas" (ITQs) are one kind of catch share, a means by which many governments regulate regulator sets a species-specific total allowable catch (TAC), typically by weight and for a given time period.

A dedicated portion of the TAC, called quota shares, is then allocated to individuals. Individual fishing quotas (IFQs) are a type of “catch share,” a means by which the U.S. government regulates fishing. They are defined under the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act (16 U.S.C.

§§ ) as permits to harvest specific quantities of fish or shellfish. With $ billion in revenue, setting regulations and catch limits is a delicate balancing act between environmental concern and a profitable industry.

The limits that are set for commercial fisheries are called individual fishing quotas, or IFQs. These are generally represented in quota shares. Allocation decisions within a quota managed fishery directly affect individual’s income and expenditure more directly than within alternative management arrangements (such as input controlled fisheries) and therefore information on these expected financial impacts is an important background data requirement in any allocation process.

How quota works. Quota is a share in a fish stock. The total number of quota shares for a fish stock is alwaysLike other shares, quota can be bought and sold. Each year, quota owners get an Annual Catch Entitlement (ACE) – the right to catch a certain amount of a fish stock during the fishing.

It also spelt disaster for Britain's fishing industry, when we were allocated the right to catch only 13 per cent of the fish, by value, in our own waters (Brussels allows the French to catch. Quota shares are a property right that represents the quota owner’s share of a fishery.

There are million shares allocated for each fishstock. Please note: There are restrictions in the Fisheries Act which controls the ownership of New Zealand quota by overseas persons or companies.

Owning quota shares does not allow you to take fish. Most U.S. fish stocks are fully or over-exploited, and harvesting in many fisheries far exceeds sustainable levels. Fishing - Report income and expenses from fishing on Schedule C (Form or SR), Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship) (PDF). Use Schedule SE (Form or SR) (PDF) to figure self-employment tax if your net earnings from fishing are $ or more. However, because of difficulties matching quota holdings with catches, many argue that IFQs are not appropriate for multispecies fisheries.

In their RFF discussion paper "Analysis of Flexibility Mechanisms for Quota-Catch Balancing in Multispecies Individual Fishing Quotas," Sanchirico, Newell, and colleagues explore on-the-ground experience with multispecies IFQ fisheries in Iceland, New.

An individual [fishing] quota (IQ or IFQ) is an allocation to an individual (a person or a legal entity (e.g., a company)) of a right [privilege] to harvest a certain amount of fish in a certain period of time.

It is also often expressed as an individual share of an aggregate quota, or total allowable catch (TAC).

Fisheries Amendment Act of was passed, creating New Zealand’s individual transferable quota (ITQ) system. Several amendments to the original legislation have since been passed, but the basic structure of the system has remained intact.

The system has been evaluated many times since its inception. Most evaluations have. Lowe, S. NMFS Fishery Biologist. Personal communication with Northern Economics Inc., January Matthews, D. Beyond IFQ Implementation: A Study of Enforcement Issues in the Alaska Individual Fishing Quota Programme.

This chapter addresses the specific issues raised by Congress in the Sustainable Fisheries Act of (Sec. [f]). These important issues are considered within the context of first principles, which are used to guide the analysis of the specific questions about individual fishing quota (IFQ) design and implementation posed by Congress and serve as the basis for the committee's recommendations.Individual Bluefin Tuna Quota () South Atlantic.
